Silhouettes by C. Harwood Rose

Silhouettes by Cindi had a wonderful silhouette day at For Heaven's Sake in Beaumont, Texas, where over 50 traditional hand-cut silhouettes were made for treasured heirloom keepsakes. I use historic, authentic French silhouette paper, no longer available today. One day I will run out of this paper, and will have to use contemporary silhouette paper, which is not as dark black, my museum paper is over 40 years old, and is of the same quality that Peggy McClard Gallery has with her collection of silhouettes dating from the 1800's.

Silhouette Table Favors

Silhouettes by Cindi did modern silhouettes from historic French archival paper of an engaged couple to use as table favors at an upcoming engagement party. Then, Silhouettes by Cindi will order silhouette cookie cutters and silhouette mugs of their silhouettes to feature at the luncheon as party favors for the guests.
The theme is brown, moss green, and cream. So each table will feature the silhouette mounted on moss green paper, and placed in a light tan contemporary wooden square frame. This will give a trendy look to the timeless art of silhouettes.

Physionotrace Workshop

Before photography, silhouettes captured styles of the era, as well as moments in time. It was hard to find a master at the hand-cut silhouette. The physionotrace machine was used-- it captured the shadow, and reduced it. Augustin Edouart was appalled by it, and the incorrect images it produced by individuals who did not know how to draw with scissors. He took a scissors, and cut out a perfect silhouette. He became the most prolific silhouette artist in the 19th century.
However, this incredible apparatus paved the way to capturing light and shadow. Rochester New York's prestigious International Museum of Photography will have an exhibit and workshop in late June covering camera obscura, camera obscura and camera lucida. People can learn how to "cast a shadow" and do a make-shift silhouettes. Although it will not be a silhouette cut by a master silhouette artist, it will be a fascinating workshop.

Master Silhouette artist, Cindi Rose Carves History

Mother’s Day is the time to give a thoughtful, cherished gift that will last forever.  A hand-cut silhouette by Cindi Rose, the world’s premier silhouette artist is perfect solution.

With thin surgical scissors, and intuitive talent, internationally acclaimed master silhouette artist, Cindi Harwood Rose, can hand-cut an accurate and paper profile, of a subject.  Silhouettes made by Cindi are sought after, and treasured by families, top collectors, historical museums and prestigious art galleries. Harwood Rose, does not sketch these intricate shades first, or use a light.  She just looks and cuts out of 50 year old antique, black French paper, paper that is no longer made today. Her silhouette busts are 2 1/2 inches to 3 1/2 inches; the authentic size, that was popular in the late 1700's and 1800's, before photography  They are not the clumsy ones traced off the wall by a teacher out of construction paper, nor or they the false look-alike versions on the internet. Paper-cutting is a fashionable art, yet difficult art to master. The Guild of American Papercutters claims that Cindi Harwood Rose is the world’s premier silhouette artist. However, there are only around 25 to 35 true living silhouette artists in the world today.  www.papercutters.info/  Rose made a world speed and accuracy silhouette record in 1982 which was submitted to the Guiness World Book of Records.

This elegant silhouette lady, studied art in France, England, and at the University of Texas where she graduated with a double major in communications and art, more than several decades before.  No wonder, she communicates in depth in her cuttings-- adding personality.  She will ask questions as she works, "do you want your hair down or in a pony-tail?  Would you wear a simple collar, or a scarf, would you like a heart necklace, pearls, or a cross?  Would you like a neck-tie in your picture?” Her work is the most realistic of the times.  Yes, she will leave out a double chin when asked.  Unlike a few other silhouette artists who may give everyone the same face and hair-do. Rose, who is fashionable, can capture today's style in her artwork.

No task is too demanding for this master silhouette artist.  A former bronze sculptor, portrait artist, oil and acrylic-painter, potter, and water-colorist, she will add beautiful painted color backgrounds and settings to her works, similar to Augustin Edourt, or hand-paint gold leaf details on her glorious cut art, similar to W. H. Beaumont, in her private commissions.   The Internationally esteemed Peggy McClard Antique gallery, in Houston , recommends Cindi's work.   This museum-style home has the world's most extensive collection of antique silhouettes, some from the 1700's, some have gone for $30,000. To glimpse at historic silhouettes or purchase books or silhouettes go www.peggymcclard.com   Rose was also sought out to cut Barbara Bush’s silhouette two years in a row, for A Friend’s of Nursing fund-raiser in Houston .  She has silhouetted Elvis Pressley, Muhamed Ali, Elvis Costello, Queen Elizabeth. Tony Bennett, Golda Mier.

For Mother’s Day, Cindi Rose will silhouette at Fundamentally Toys at 1963 West Gray in River Oaks, Saturday, May 1, and at BB1 Classic at 1106-06 Uptown Park Blvd, May 6. Silhouettes are $40 a person, with extra copies at $10.  Hours are 11:00 to 4:30.  Appointments are recommended by phoning (713) 385-0736.  Children do not have to sit still.
When asked, why she cuts silhouettes and elaborate paper-cuts, she says, “ A silhouette can capture so much more of life, and it is not shallow, indeed.”  For more information contact Cincere@wt.net, silhouettesbycindiblogpot, Silhouettes by Cindi Facebook or www.silhouettesbycindi.com

Customer Reviews and Thanks

THANK YOU!

Cindi - I can't begin to thank you for flying all the way to California just to be there for 24 hours on my special day! I don't think I need to tell you that you were such a huge hit at the wedding. All of my guests were raving about your amazing talent and they were thoroughly impressed with the way you were able to capture each person's personality. You are a true artist that stands in a category of your own and your work is unparalleled. The silhouette cutter station set my wedding apart from any others that my guests have attended and they will remember it every time they see their framed silhouette. Nelson and I love our elegant silhouettes and we thank you for the beautiful frames. I flip thru my silhouette album all the time and I love that I went with that instead of a regular boring guest book. I will always remember you for playing a very special part on my big day! Thanks!

Sincerely,

Mrs. May German

Dear Cindi,

Thank you so much for the wonderful silhouettes of Don and Campbell and of Don and myself. It was sweet of you to take time out of your very busy schedule to come to our home on Saturday to create your special magic. We have enjoyed looking at the silhouettes all weekend and sharing them with our friends.

It was so great to see you and Franklin and your new rockin' jag. We are so proud to display your work in our home. Thanks again for very special keepsakes for the Collins Family to treasure forever.

Love,
Janet

Thank you again for meeting with Alex, Claudia and Mr. Z last week - They were very happy with the final product!!

Graciously,

Alia

Dear Cindi,

Our daughter Molly and son Charlie had their silhouettes cut by you today at Fundamentally Toys. You were kind enough to do my daughter's twice, and we wanted to let you know how happy we are with the second image. You have really captured them both, and we are thrilled to have these beautiful memories of how our kids looked in the summer of 2010. We appreciate the extra time you spent with Molly. Thank you.

Kate, Jonathan, Molly, and Charlie Day

p.s. - We are especially excited to hang these with the one you did of me at Astroworld in 1980. My sister, whose silhouette you cut in 1980 as well, also came in today with her two daughters. It's a family tradition now!

I almost cried when I saw them... seriously! I was breath-taken and speechless! Your art is so distinct and beautiful, especially considering you've never met our daughter nor seen a proper photo. You did a terrific and PERFECT job in capturing her sweet face. Thank you so much Cindy, words escape me now. You're a very talented lady and I will be sending you more business in the future.

Gratefully, MaryPat

Cindi. You did silhouettes of my twins 25 years ago and I still have them.

They're one one of the most precious things I own. We will be celebrating the Twins 30th birthday this Saturday. Thank you for beautiful memories.

Andrea Singer-Lepow

Hello

Just a note to say Thank you for the memories of the silhouettes of our 25 yr old son & 21 year old daugter. They were 3 and 4 years old when you did them & signed them. Different times. No one like you. Continue as you are. Love Mehrnaz book.

Dear Cindi, Jan. 10, 2011
Tonight on PBS Antique show they showed silhouettes as an item to appraise...........I immediately brought up the wonderful silhouette you cut of my husband and me.
I googled you - and read your story. How exciting it was to see what you have accomplished with your talents and created a way to share your life.
I have always had it framed and displayed since you did it. What you may find interesting is how very many years ago this was. My husband worked at JSC in Clear Lake, but he also had a personal Air Conditioning business. Once of the suppliers had a picnic at a park in Friendswood. You were there cutting silhouettes as a favor for each of the customers to take home. I would guess it was in the mid-early '70's. I have always loved and appreciated this "thank you gift" from that company. I know you have heard many stories, but I thank you so much for this remembrance.
We lived in Seabrook,TX. for nearly 40 years. In 2004 we retired and now live near Hot Springs, Arkansas. Of course we often make trips back to the Houston area to visit friends and family. Tom worked for Nasa for nearly 30 years and I had a catering business during that time. I now attempt to be creative with small paintings, cards, poetry and short stories.
Cindi - I will continue to enjoy the silhouette - but what pride I feel in being some of your first "people"!!!! AND - what joy you share with your "cutting talent". Then add the wonderful Rose Ribbon Foundation to your accomplishments.
Sincerely,
Neala Gunderson
Hot Springs Village, AR.

A kind note from the Activity Assistant after the event:

Cindi--to merely say "thank you" seems so inadequate for the blessing of
having you spend time with us here at The Forum! Please know how much I
appreciate you working with us expense wise and I do recognize that it was
very generous of you.
I hope that we might connect again sometime in the not so distant future for
perhaps a different activity like we discussed.
Thank you again and I wish you well in all of your endeavors.

A letter to Cindi;

Hi Cindi, Natalie Allouche here. I am friends with Holly. My son Yonadav Z'L was in Houston for 2 years, at MD Anderson. I remember the time you set up an appointment for me to see Michaell, your hairdresser. It really made me feel so good when so much was so wrong. I hope you and your family are all in good health. I have the silhouette of Yoyo you did of him hanging in my bedroom, next to his brother's Adar Z"L.
Hard to believe it has been 3 years. I would love to visit Holly for a day or so, probably fly, can't stand the ride!
Maybe we could see each other to say hello?
Take care and thank you for your kindness at such a difficult time in my life
Regards
Natalie Allouche

The Dish~ Houston

What would be a more wonderful way to say "I love you" than a thoughtful hand-cut silhouette by scissorgraphist, Cindi Rose, a treasured art seldom seen and mastered. Silhouettes, also called paper-profiles, will be cut on Friday, Feb. 12, at Tanglewood Gifts located at Chimney Rock and Woodway, at 5750 Woodway, from 11 to 1, and 2 to 5. Rose, who is considered the "foremost living silhouette artist" uses natural talents and surgical scissors to capture a likeness, without a sketch or shadow. This insures that the work will have fine-details and embellishments such as stylish hair-dos, ribbons, neck-ties, pipes, head-bands, and necklaces.
A second generation artist, she began drawing portraits at 11 years old, and cutting silhouettes for a Disney amusement park lessee, at 16.
There are only around 25 authentic practicing silhouette artists (also called papyrotomists) in the world. A silhouette gift lasts forever, and will show that your love will last forever. Silhouettes are $40 a person, with extra copies at $10 a person. This way you can think of spouse's, parents, siblings, and other loved ones. Children do not have to sit still or be dressed for the occasion. Master silhouette artist, Cindi Harwood Rose, can make them look "clean" in the picture. To make things more loveable, this will benefit The Rose Ribbon Foundation, to help the uninsured with critical illness.
For more information contact (713) 385-0736, or Tanglewood Gifts at (713) 266-1006. No appointments are needed, but are reccommended. Silhouettes can be done of pets from profile pictures.
