Silhouettes by Cindi. Offering the best of contemporary silhouette cutting. I'd like to introduce you to my friend and silhouette artist, Cindi Harwood Rose. Cindi began cutting silhouettes when she was 16 years old. She is a co-founder of the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation 501 (c ) (3) for which she creates custom "Silhouettes For Survivors," which are available for purchase. All Silhouette proceeds are dedicated to helping uninsured breast cancer survivors receive free reconstructive surgery. The Foundation was created in memory and honor of Holly Harwood Skolkin, Cindi's sister also a 20th and 21st century silhouette artist and humanitarian. Holly survived with Stage 4 breast cancer for 15 years. The Foundation was started during Holly's life and it continues in her honor. The Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation offers also offer wigs, support, permanent brows to those in chemo who lost their brows, and free reconstructive surgery to under and un-insured. Cindi Harwood Rose is acclaimed by the Guild of Papercutters as the premier silhouette artist of the last four decades. Cindi uses French silhouette paper that is more than 50 years old and no longer made. I first met Cindi in 1984, when she cut the silhouette of my son, Nathan, at Joske's Department store. I became friends with Cindi over the last few years as we have worked together to promote silhouette art, both antique and new. Cindi is talented, creative and responsive to requests for certain kinds of silhouettes. Her work is fresh and incorporates inspiration from historic silhouettists as well as contemporary work with an eye towards realism. When Cindi first visited my home gallery and shop, she was taken by the works of Everet Howard, the 19th century silhouettist who cut my logo silhouette at the very top of the page. Howard used very creative, varying bust-line terminations. At Cindi's next silhouette-cutting event, she incorporated creative, varying bust-line terminations in her work. She soon cut my silhouette with such a creative bust-line termination. Recently, I asked Cindi to cut a very elaborate silhouette that I could give to Nathan and his fiancé, Rachel, as a wedding shower gift. I forwarded my favorite of their engagement photos to Cindi and asked her to recreate it in silhouette with an elaborate background. She obliged, offering three wonderfully creative silhouettes from which I could choose. Cindi is available to cut silhouettes for your special occasion. She cuts designs for wedding invitations and even does some silhouette jewelry. Proceeds from her silhouette cutting goes to the Rose Ribbon Foundation. International traveler, yet Dallas resident, Kenneth J. Downing, recently created quite a buzz with his juxtaposition of silhouettes on the runway for Neiman-Marcus in Houston. The event was The Spirit of Spring Children’s Assessment Center Luncheon, chaired by slender fashion plates Diane Caplan Brown and Nancy Marcus (where did she get that middle name?) Golden, formerly of Dallas and Beverly Hills. Ken J. (as his closest friend call him) happens not to only be a television fashion diva—think Project Runway All Stars, Oprah, E! Entertainment, Fox News, he is the senior Vice President and Fashion Director of Neiman Marcus world-wide. Yet, the gift to him, that most pleased his inner child was made by humanitarian and silhouette artist Cindi Harwood Rose—his custom silhouette portrait, as shown. Cindi in Givenchy, pulled out her famous plastic surgeon husband, Franklin’s surgical scissors (or maybe her own)and some antique, thin black paper, and without a sketch, she snipped his likeness, sans the hair-cut. His golden locks, normally seen, had been trimmed, thus, fine artist, Cindi Rose, captured that, his facial features, whimsical personality, and his slender, boyish charm. “OHHHHH!” Kenneth exclaimed, “My mother will love this, she collects silhouettes and has around 600 in her home!” Cindi Rose immediately placed it into a black wooden frame with gold leaf, and jewels she had placed on the frame herself. When asked how she managed to mix the classic, modern, traditional, and antique, with humor, she explained, “It is interpretive, I could never frame a silhouette for Kenneth J. Downing in the average, that he is not.” The NM fashion show displayed art equal to Cindi Harwood Rose’s unique silhouette talents, and in themes. The Children’s Assessment Center’s “Spirit of Spring” luncheon chaired by Diane Caplan and Nancy Marcus Golden was a huge success. Ken Downing and Neiman Marcus had an incredible fashion show, with colorful silhouettes streaming down the runway. Ashley Judd, Award winning actress and humanitarian gave a chat on-stage with TV personality Deborah Duncan, on how to go forward in life with trials and tragedy.

Cindi Rose says, “It was a pleasure to be part of this important group, and have the honor to cut a silhouette of Ashley Judd, who admires the art. The Children’s Assessment Center not only tries to stop sexual abuse with children, but offers support to those who have experienced a trauma such as this, to move forward in life.

Silhouette artist Cindi Harwood Rose is the Pied Piper of silhouette artists. Even wiggly children, are amazed at her magic scissors. “The scissors are like a magic wand to the children,” says Cindi, “they glisten and make shapes from special French silhouette paper”. A self-taught silhouette artist, Cindi, does not underplay the importance of natural art talents. “If you cannot draw a profile with a pencil, pen, or brush, then you could never draw with scissors,” C. H. Rose, explains. It is much harder, and that is why you rarely see real silhouette artist, who can do the lovely miniatures. By this, Cindi is speaking of the skilled artist who merely looks at a subject and cuts directly from the paper, without the use of a light, pencil, pen, or camera. Considered by many as one of the universe’s kindest people, and perhaps, highest evolved souls, former silhouette artist, Holly Harwood Skolkin passes peacefully. Holly, was the daughter of Doris and Earl Harwood, a fine artist, and attorney. Holly was always upbeat and precious, and very talented, in all arts. She is survived by her sister, Bonny Cotlar, an intellect and humanitarian, and Cindi Harwood Rose, an internationally acclaimed silhouette artist, who also worked for Disneyland and Disneyworld. Holly’s struggle with stage 4 cancer for over 15 years, inspired Holly, Cindi, and Cindi’s husband, Dr. Franklin Rose, a renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon, to form The Rose Ribbon Foundation 501 ( c ) ( 3 ), a non-profit which provides free reconstruction to those uninsured and underinsured. Holly remarkably was able to help others throughout her cancer opportunity, giving blessings, and doing good deeds. She was also an accomplished photographer, who became a master at inner-eye photography and diagnosing disease. Some of her peers claim that Holly Harwood Skolkin was one of the first to detect AIDS in the eye, from photos she had taken. Her husband, Dr. Mark Skolkin, is a famed radiologist, who stood by her side throughout her long sickness. It was amazing how she would find pleasure in bringing food to those sick, when she was sick, or buying clothes for the poor, but not buying clothes for herself. More than 1,400 came to her funeral, and she was buried in 1 ½ days. She is survived by her beautiful children, Emory, who works in development at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and Dayna, a nursing student at University of Texas in Austin. Holly was an incredible mother, friend, wife, and sister, great artist, award winning photographer, and ICON in the realm of giving to many causes. She especially loved the Aishel House which provides kosher meals, housing, transportation, and child care to critically sick families who come to Houston for its wonderful medical center, considered the best in the world. Another cause that Holly served on the board on is The River, which provides art, dance, and theatre lessons to children with challenges and disabilities, including Down Syndrome, loss of sight, CP, CF, hearing impaired.

Some people call Holly, “Holly Lama, Wholy Holly (for making ill people feel whole), Holly Dolly, a guru, a saint, a mensch, and a Tzadic. Her huge smile and bright eyes, and kind heart, shown even moments before she passed. Because of her legacy, and inspiration the Rose Ribbon Foundation will soon be called the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation. was a hero, a humanitarian, and perhaps, the most loved human on earth. Her good deeds will live on forever, she is a silhouette of a lovely, kind, great human, some say one of the top 12 souls that walked the earth of this generation.

Silhouette Artist Holly Harwood Skolkin Passes Away

Holly Harwood Skolkin passed away peacefully at home on February 10, 2012 surrounded by her family. Holly was born in Houston on June 22, 1952, to Doris Zellda and Earl Isadore Harwood. She had a happy childhood with sisters and best friends, Bonny and Cindi.
At the University of Texas, Holly was an active member in Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority where she made many lifelong friends. She became a skilled silhouette artist, cutting freehand facial profile likenesses of people from Houston to Disneyland.
Following graduation in 1974 with a degree in photojournalism, she began a distinguished career in medical photography. Holly worked in the Ophthalmology Department at the University of Texas-Houston, Baylor College of Medicine, and Emory University where she produced world class fluorescein angiograms and ophthalmic ultrasounds. She served on the National Board of The Society of Retinal Angiographers.
After the birth of her children, her professional career was subrogated to raising Dayna and Emory, the joys of her life. She shared with them her love of Judaism, ethnic foods, movies, and family vacations. She adored her many nieces and nephews. Her guiding message, a variation on the Beatles lyric, was "in the end the love you make should be more than the love you take".
She involved her family and friends in her many mitzvah projects, including The River and Aishel House, two organizations for which she was a founding board member. She treasured her extended family in Hadassah and at Congregation Beth Yeshurun.
Her spirituality and optimistic attitude helped her battle stage 4 breast cancer for nearly 15 years. She was a role model, companion, and confidante for numerous cancer patients and their loved ones. It was often a difficult journey, one that inspired the creation of the Rose Ribbon Foundation by sister, Cindi, and brother-in-law, Dr. Franklin Rose, in her honor.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Mark, children, Dayna and Emory, and sisters, Bonny Cotlar and husband David, Cindi Rose and husband Franklin, and their children.
The family is most grateful to her many caregivers over the years, including doctors Richard Theriault, Gerry Cypress, and Rush Lynch, as well as Elena Velasquez and her friends in the Nursing Department at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. Those who wish to make a memorial contribution are encouraged to support the Aishel House, Rose Ribbon Foundation, Congregation Beth Yeshurun, Friends of Nursing at St. Lukes.
Rest peacefully, our Holly Dolly, and know that we will miss you and the world is a better place because you were here.

at Beaumont’s exquisite Symphony Belle Ball. This classical league raises more money than any other symphony league. It was a marriage, classical silhouettes matched with timeless classical music.

Everything You Want to Know About Silhouette Artists

Silhouette art is not old-fashioned, it appears to be as trendy as ever. Yet, great silhouette artists are hard to find, and there are only a handful of excellent cut-paper profilists in the world today. The world’s best silhouette artists can be found easily on the internet, by googling the word silhouette artist. The first 8 names listed from the only 20 or so real silhouette artists in existence today, most likely are each an accomplished silhouette artist, in varying ability.

In home decorating, you see life-sized silhouettes of all colors, themed into the décor, stamped out on canvas. The clever decorator will just send in profile photos and find a company on the internet, that can turn this into a large framed art piece. But is this a real silhouette? According to America’s premier silhouette artists, Cindi Harwood Rose and Kathryn Flocken, it is not. Cindi Rose, a high quality silhouette artist for 40 years says, “While these computer stamped silhouettes from photos may add a personal touch to a room, they should not be confused with the artwork of silhouette hand-cutting from life, an art difficult to master.” Kathryn Flocken, writes, in her book, Silhouettes Rediscovering The Lost Art,” In the modern age of photography, film and digital art, silhouette portraiture and design is fast becoming a lost art.”

The silhouette of “it-girl Erica” was framed on the spot, along with her precious sister, for holiday gifts. Artist, C. Rose says that Erica Dasher, is fresh, beautiful, naturally talented, creative, down-to-earth and a real role model for young adults. Jane by Design airs on Tuesday nights, and is a sensation. Silhouette artist, Cindi Rose, wants to design silhouette fashions and pendants for Dasher. Dasher loves vintage, and C. Rose’s original art has an art deco, vintage feel. Throw out the cookies, popcorn and wrapping paper, bring in Cindi Silhouette school fund-raisers!

Billions were spent this year on candy, cavities, and wasted wrapping paper pollution, in the name of great school fundraisers. Cindi Harwood Rose discovered that schools, churches, and non-profits can profit from a real silhouette artist, donating a percent to their venue. For River Oaks Baptist School, Cindi Rose, did 87 children’s silhouettes and taught them great facts about art while entertaining them on the famous history of paper profiling. Rose, does the antique lost art of looking and cutting miniature silhouettes, the type that is treasured for centuries, and is collectable. The silhouettes will be made into a quilt and sold at the school’s auction. The separate silhouettes will be sold to the parents, too for additional school profit. Some schools, such as Austin’s Grace Garden Child Development Center is procuring Rose and will sell picture frames, for the silhouettes, to add additional church revenues. These non-profits can make a few hundred to a few thousand with the promotion. They have hired Rose at a flat fee, one that is one-third of Cindi’s normal appearance fees. At Houston’s best art and craft boutique, Hanson Galleries, Memorial and Post Oak, Cindi Harwood donated all her profits to the Craft Relief Emergency Fund to aid those who lose art and craft supplies from emergencies, such as the recent Texas fires. With honor, Cindi Harwood Rose, America's premier silhouette artist was the featured historic speaker at a Daughter's of the American Revolution luncheon for the Alexander Love NSDAR chapter. In 1923 a group of active ladies joined together to offer patriotic support and volunteerism setting up "Camp Logan" which is now in Memorial Park, Houston, Texas. Historical documents and silhouettes were brought in by Cindi Rose, including those by Augustine Edourt and C. Harwood Rose of John Hamilton, George Washington, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and George 111. Rose speech, was for the pursuit of happiness, and light upon capturing moments. She demonstrated, how real silhouettes done by viewing a person and environment, and not using a shadow, or camera, or Photoshop, capture personality, and say more about fashion, style and history, than the ones made from wall shadows. The lost art of heirloom silhouette profiling that Rose does, is almost non-existent, especially with the detail and acute likeness she acquires. Rose, after putting her precious antique silhouette art paper away to raise two children, searched the net for today’s practicing silhouette artists, to find what she thought was the most professional and accurate living silhouette artist, that proved to be Kathryn. 1. What is a silhouette artist? The broad word silhouette can apply to window shades, fashion, prehistoric cave drawings, Chinese embroidery patterns, iconic symbols on Grecian and Egyptian urns or crafty photo shopped or traced shadows. A real silhouette artist, the term created by the America’s premier silhouette artist, Augustine Edouart, applies to fine artists who can capture a profile, from hand-cutting portraits from black paper, freehand, using only their vision and natural talent, scissors and soot-blackened paper. Edouart renamed the English term “shades” after, Etienne de Silhouette, a French minister of Finance who loved the thrifty price of silhouettes compared to expensive oil paintings, there were no cameras at that time.

2. Where do you find a Silhouette artist? You find them on the streets of Paris, or in amusement parks, or in nice stores. However, all silhouette artists are not created equal.

The silhouettes created by these authentic silhouette artists, can be only as good as the artist is. In other words, some artists do not see the differences in everyone’s face,

and may not know style. I would shy away from street artists, and research the internet, for the gifted silhouette artists. Make sure the artist you select, does not make

everyone look old-fashioned or “out-of-style”. Look at the video by Cindi Rose and Cody Bess on You-Tube. The best silhouette artists, also know fashion.

3. How do you learn to cut silhouettes? Usually, the best way to acquire this talent is genetics—it is passed down from three to four generations of silhouette artists. It is a natural talent. I tried to teach it to other fabulous artists while I was a student in fine arts at University of Texas. The husband/wife team I taught after hours of training, cannot capture a good likeness, and thus, I have not spent weeks again trying to teach this art, even to top art students. There are books on the internet on this subject, but the books can’t guarantee that you can master this complicated, lost art. The best book is by Kathryn Flocken, Silhouettes Rediscovering the Lost Art.

4. How long does it take to do Silhouettes by a real silhouette artist? As the world’s fastest silhouette artist (see SilhouettesbyCindi blog story printed in San Antonio Express Newspapers, submitted to Guinness Book of World-Records) I can do over 100 silhouettes per hour—with an exact likeness, and eyelashes, style. However, at most weddings, corporate events and stores, I do 30 to 60 silhouettes per hour, depending on if someone else is mounting them, and how much detail I will put in to it. The fastest silhouette artists are the premier silhouette artists, they have the innate gift of seeing contour, detail, form and structure.

I have seen the slower, less gifted silhouette artists, take up to 15 minutes to cut a silhouette. The finished product is not smooth. The most capable silhouette artists of Victorian and classic paper profile cutting take 5 minutes or less per person.

5. Can I get a silhouette by e-mail? Yes. Cindi Harwood Rose only does e-mail orders of original signed silhouettes from SilhouettesbyCindi.com or Roseribbonfoundation.org. They are more expensive, but are of archival, antique, French silhouette paper, worth more than their cost ($100 as a tax-donation to cancer-survivors). They come on archival paper, with hand-cut black oval mats, and postage is included. You can also order silhouettes on cuff-links or pendants.

6. What should I wear for the silhouette, and should I fix my or my child’s hair? Don’t dress for the silhouette, or worry about the hair. The most gifted silhouette artists

have an imagination, and are fine artists and can make you, your loved one, or child’s hair and clothing look “fixed” in the picture.

7. My child will not “sit-still” how can I get a silhouette? No worry, the preeminent leading silhouette artists are skilled with “wiggly children”. They move to the child.

You may have never seen a real silhouette artist, they are not the school teachers who trace a crude shadow off a wall, or use the trick of a camera. They are talented fine artists who have natural talent to see profile.

8. Can you do pets? Yes, of course! I love to do furry and feathered friends. This is done from profile photos sent to CindiSilhouettes@gmail.com It is a charity donation to a pet cause or cancer cause. SilhouettesbyCindi only takes internet orders for non-profit donations. They cost more than other silhouette artists charge, but you get signed, mounted art, that is collectable according to Peggy McClard, the world’s foremost authority on purchasing and collecting antique investment silhouettes. 9. Will you do silhouettes at my wedding? Yes, of course, if the arrangements work with both our schedules. I love to help with the total theme, the invitations, napkins,

10. What else does a skilled silhouette artist do? I love being a curator or speaker on the effects silhouettes have had to pre-date the camera. It is interesting to give lectures to museums and art galleries about the shadow, and how I work with the person, so the Jung definition of the shadow being your dark past, is replaced with the light of my work. In addition, I can do large scale silhouettes for plays, set-design, art and advertising design. Pet Silhouette of Dear Dog Betty

Wednesday I met my friend, Bruce for lunch, and to bring him pet silhouettes

of his 4 dogs for a birthday gift. I completed them at 4 a.m. in the

morning. I was not happy with the dog silhouette of Betty, as Betty looked

cartoonish, happy, and not real. I left it as was, and in the late morning

(with 5 hours sleep) I pondered changing it, but did not. I brought it to

lunch. He got tears in his eyes. Betty had died that morning, little did I

know.

Betty wanted Bruce to know that she was happy in doggie heaven, and related

that to me, as I cut her silhouette. I try to do psychic silhouettes, and

go into the soul. I did not know I had the ability with pets, too.

Silhouette profile miniatures past and present, have been cherished in the 17^th, 18^th, 19^th, 20^th, and 21^st century. Many silhouette artists offer their services on-line such as Paperportraits.com which sells three silhouettes for $25.00. There are over 15 tutorials on E-how, on how to cut a silhouette, but those are for the novice, non-artist. These are not silhouettes, they are shadow tracings, or photo-shopped color-ins, and rarely really look like the person, as the shadow is often distorted. I examined and commented as “Cindi Rose Silhouette Artist” on all of them. The only good one, was the tutorial that suggested how to make silhouette images of full figures for parties. The problem is the tools on these e-how tutorials. They use cardboard, and rough paper. They cannot get the lovely smooth cuts skilled silhouette artists get. In addition, since they cannot draw a portrait with a pen or pencil (unless they are maybe an art teacher skilled in that?), how could they translate the shadow, and actually do a good job cutting it out afterwards, where it was not clumsy? They paste the art with Elmer’s glue, which leaves tell-tale signs. For great silhouette ideas look at You Tube silhouette artist and view the speed, quality, personality, and style of the artists. Also, look at the Guild of American Paper cutters site, and see the history of the marvelous art of silhouettes, historical, contemporary, modern, and cultural—past and present.

ABC’s popular Bachelor Pad will start airing Monday, August 8, starring friends Erica Rose and Vienna Giraldi. Both girls will be on all episodes. While filming, Vienna confessed to tiara-clad Erica, that she did not like her nose. She did not know that Erica’s father, Franklin Rose, was a plastic surgeon. Erica suggested and arranged for Vienna to get her nose done by her father. Law student/reality star Erica picked Vienna up from the airport, and had her sleep at her parents’ home. Next day, Erica’s mother, Cindi, came in with surgical scissors, to perform nasal surgery” a la silhouette art” on Vienna. In a minute, Cindi silhouetted Vienna’s crocked nose from thin black paper, freehand, making two copies. Vienna exclaimed, “Oh, I love this, I will always remember why I am having my nose done.” Then, in a snip Cindi performed nasal surgery on the other silhouette. “This “ Cindi said, “is how my husband may make your nose.” The nose will be unveiled in US Weekly this week. Don’t get confused when you watch Bachelor Pad, that is Vienna’s nose before she had it done.

Now that Vienna has a new nose, word is she will be filming her own reality show on a country television network, called something like, Vienna’s Hillbillies.”
